Sergeant Dale Dennany and Officer Mario Jenkins'
police dog Makye wait for Jenkin's funeral procession to enter Woodlawn
Cemetery on Saturday, October 1, 2005.
What should have been the most joyous night of football at the University of Central Florida in 699 days was instead the most tragic. Just after 5 p.m. (an hour before the Golden Knights took the field and ended their 17-game losing streak) Jenkins - working a plain-clothes underage drinking sting - was apparently trying to break up a fight in Citrus Bowl parking lot when he was shot and killed by an Orlando police officer who didn't know Jenkins was a fellow officer. A week later, there are still more questions than answers as thousands say goodbye to Officer Jenkins.
I had never covered a police funeral before. I wasn't prepared for the magnitude. Hundreds upon hundreds of patrol cars from agencies across the state. A horde of local media.
Fans will be tailgating at the Citrus Bowl again Saturday as UCF takes on Memphis. The officers patrolling the grounds will all be in uniform.
